A red-headed blue-eyed baby came into our home on April 25, 1989. Bethany always had spunk and a great personality. She did not let her special abilities dictate the life that she led. People talk about quality of life and look at a person with special needs as perhaps having a lower quality of life. This was not true at all with Bethany. She lived life to the fullest. Bethany loved to travel, loved her music and loved bossing everyone around. She was a BIG personality and left her mark and impact on all of those who had the pleasure of meeting her. Her smile and laugh would light up a room and you never forgot it!
Bethany graduated from Midland High School in 2011. She loved riding on the van to her DayHab program which we called "work" because she had graduated and after you graduate, what do you do? Go to work. She loved her van drivers and Dayhab workers and the other clients that she attended Dayhab with. She loved going to Nana & Papaw's house many afternoons after Dayhab finished and ruled the TV watching Gaither videos. Again, she was always the boss. In fact, we called her the "bossiest non-verbal communicator" and if you knew Bethany, no explanation was needed. Bethany was on the praise and worship team at Harvest Time Church and although no sound came out of her mic, she had it up to her lips and was scrutinizing the harmonies. She was part of the "Praying Mama's Club" bible study, even though she wasn't a mama, she was there every Thursday night listening to the prayer requests and helping bring them before God.
Bethany loved going on "big bye-byes". If a trip included travel on a plane, train, shuttle, bus, rental car, she was in her heyday. She loved staying in hotels. She loved her Fritos, Cheetos, and milk. She always had at least one bible, her other books, paperwork and pens close at hand. Bethany loved to shred. The sound of paper shredding gave her great satisfaction. When she got paid to shred, she put it in her fanny pack. If she did not get paid, she padded her fanny pack letting you know that payment was in order.
Bethany loved her family. Her brother and sister were so amazing with her, and she thought they hung the moon. She also loved her sister-in-law and brother-in-law as they came into the family. She loved calling her Dad "the Cray-Cray" and would laugh and laugh. In the last months of her life, she would have been bed bound had it not been for Daddy's strong arms and strong determination that her life would remain normal as far as movement and going bye-bye. She kept her Mama's nurse brain going constantly trying to figure everything out to keep her healthy. Textbooks said we were supposed to keep her 3 years, but we kept her 36 years, however that was always a medical tightrope. As Dr. Nabulsi who was her pediatrician for two decades said, "Bethany never followed the rules". She was also adored by all of her grandparents.
Bethany went to bed lying next to Mama after Daddy had covered her up and kissed her on the head three times as he did every night. The next morning she woke up in the arms of Jesus, telling him all about it.
Bethany is now reunited in heaven with her Aunt Jill Braland. She was survived by her grandfather Richard Dumire, but he quickly joined her in heaven two days after she got there.
She is survived by her parents, Leonard and Jenifer Dumire. Her sister Amanda (Vic). Her brother Jonathan (Susan). Her grandparents John and Gloria Miller, Elizabeth Dumire and Cindy Dumire. Her Aunt Joyce Polley and Uncle Brian Braland. Her cousins Hillary Braland and Michael Polley.
Her viewing and family visitation will be at Mayberry Funeral Home (406 E. Illinois Midland, Texas 79702) on Friday, October 17th from 2-8 pm. Her purple party celebration of life will be Saturday, October 18th at 3 pm at Harvest Time Church (8300 Hwy 191).
A memorial has been set up in honor of Bethany. We will be purchasing a house where missionaries can stay/live while they are home on furlough. This house will be completely outfitted with all furnishings and linens, etc. This will be called "Bethany's House" in her honor.
