Maureen was born in Grenada, U.S Virgin Islands, on May 20, 1957 to Hubert and Adonia Phillip. She grew up in Grenada for a short time then moved to Trinidad where she spent some of her teenage years. Her family then moved to Brooklyn, New York where she finished her highschool education. After highschool she moved to Midland, TX with her parents where she eventually met her husband Ricky Hyson. In 1982 she welcomed her son and in 1985 she welcomed her daughter.
Maureen was a devoted mother and a friend to many. She worked as a nurse's aid, but most people remember her from her days of being a waitress. She was always going to make sure that you had what you needed. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, shopping, talking, dancing, and listening to calypso and reggae music. She often taught her children and friends the culture of her country by her cooking and life skills. She would always say, "this is how we used to do it in the islands." Her love for others was always genuine and the hospitality she gave was always that island love.
Maureen was always full of life and left behind a legacy with her grandchildren: Alex, Davon, Zemar, Jermine, Cameron, Cooper, Amari, and Uriah; including her great grandchildren Hendrix and Malikai. Her legacy is also passed on to her nieces and nephews: Nicholi, Mandy, Brian, Kenny, Kevin, Sharon, Destinee, Leah, Tatyana, Sajabrian, Brittany, Olsi, and Ryan.
