Shirlene Iverson Caldwell

December 17, 1939 — October 21, 2025

On December 17, 1939, Shirlene Iverson was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, the oldest of 10 children to Floyd Iverson, Sr. and Mary Etta (Henson) Iverson. The family lived in Ringgold, Louisiana, but Shirlene attended school in Coushatta, Louisiana.

On the second Sunday in June 1956, she met Ruborn Daniel Caldwell (R.D) at a Children's Day Program at St. Matthew Baptist Church in Ringgold. She and R.D married on August 22, 1957 in Ringgold. Three days after their wedding, they relocated to Midland, Texas because of prospective job opportunities, with plans to go further west to California. Those plans never materialized and their four amazing children Gloria, Wanda, Daniel, and Marlene, were born and raised in Midland.

On the fourth Sunday in September 1957, Shirlene joined the Macedonia Baptist Church under the pastorship of Rev. H. F. Doyle. In her 68 years as a member of Macedonia, she was also under the pastorage of Revs. O.J. Archie and Woodrow Bailey III. At Macedonia, she was dedicated and committed, serving in the choir, Mission, Sunday School, Women of Strength, and the JOY Ministry, where she sent out birthday and anniversary cards to the members.

Shirlene had outstanding culinary skills - in other words, she was an excellent cook. She was known for making the best ever potato salad, banana pudding, and cabbage. She worked in the church kitchen for over 40 years and oversaw the operations for six years.

Shirlene was a servant at heart, volunteering for the HEB Feast of Sharing for several years. She also worked for private homes, MidTran, Levi Strauss & Co., and the Midland Independent School District (MISD) Transportation, where in May 2004, she was named Driver of the Year. She retired from MISD in May 2011 after 25 years of dedicated service. Awards she has received include the OJ Archie "Still Standing" Award and the MLK Community Award. For years, she was an active member of the Southeast Senior Center.

Shirlene is preceded in death by her husband, who passed on August 9, 1994; her parents, four brothers (Ivory Iverson, Shelton Iverson, James Iverson, and Donald Iverson); and two sisters (Bobbie Blow and Shelley Moore).

Her memories are entrusted to her children, Gloria Todd, Wanda Merritt (Earnest), Daniel Caldwell (Carolyn), and Marlene Washington (Anthony); two sisters (Martha Reliford and Sally Caldwell); one brother (Floyd Iverson, Jr.); nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; and special friend and companion (Archie Williams).
