Shirley Marie (Johnson) Howard also known as "The Hat Lady", was born on May 28, 1952 in Midland, Texas to Richard Johnson and Mattie Maxwell Johnson Thomas. She peacefully passed away on Monday, April 1, 2024 surrounded by family.
She attended schools in the Midland Independent School District and graduated from Midland High School where she participated in sports. She received her degree from Texas Women's University and worked as a nurse at various hospitals in Texas and Oklahoma, including Midland Memorial Hospital.
After retiring from nursing, Shirley became passionate about education and dedicated herself to helping at-risk students in the Midland community. She was proud to have attended the inauguration of President Barack Obama and a National Black Caucus banquet. She also served on the Texas State Teachers Association board of directors as an E.S.P.E at large, where she served on many committees and was the vice chair of the Black Caucus.
