A legend has rested, Thomas Okila Esikhati, son of the soil was promoted from labor to reward on April 27, 2026. He was the loving son of the Late Dr. Isaac Esilaba Esikhati MD. and the Late Rael Ochango Esikhati of Mumboha Village. Thomas was born in Luanda, Ebusikhale Sub-Location, Mumboha Village. Thomas was living in Midland, Texas with his loving wife Carolyn Laverne Esikhati where they enjoyed life together for thirty years.
Thomas attended Alliance High School where he excelled in academics, athletics and school choir. Thomas loved music he and two of his classmates formed a band headlining under the name "The Strangers." Thomas loved to jam as the bass guitar player in the group. He was a standout athlete competing in the 100 meters, relay teams and the steeplechase track and field events. At the age of 16 he continued his academic pursuits entering Kenyatta University where he earned a Bachelors in Education. Upon earning his teaching certification, Thomas taught at Njoro Secondary School. He maintained his competitive edge and his love for track and field. As an elite athlete Thomas represented Kenya in the 1968 Olympics. Following the Olympics track and field competition, still a young competitor in 1972 Thomas was the recipient of an athletic scholarship. That scholarship was to the United States where he entered, Eastern New Mexico University. As a member of the men relay team Thomas and his teammates set a record that still stands at the University. An avid learner, his other academic achievements included earning a bachelor's degree at Eastern New Mexico and a masters degree from Texas Tech University.
While teaching with Lubbock ISD Thomas was recruited by MISD to develop the soccer program for the district's Athletic Department. As head boys soccer coach at Midland High School, Thomas led the team to the State Final Four competition. During his tenure he organized the girls' soccer team and coached the Cross-country track team. He retired from MISD and later returned in 2025 in a support role at Legacy Freshman High School under the leadership of his former student and student athlete Misty Rings. He continued in this position until his demise.
Thomas was a deeply family-oriented man; he and his wife lovingly opened their home to three of his nieces Faith Kisibo, Juliana and husband Wilson, Addah and his nephew Armstrong who all journeyed from Kenya arriving at their home in Midland, Texas. He also mentored numerous individuals from Kenya, and other African countries arriving in Midland, Texas. The Esikhatis also opened their home to a Foreign Exchange student from Spain.
His love for Kenya will be remembered by many. Led by this love and his generous nature Thomas was the organizer and founder of the Kenyans in West Texas Organization (KWTO). This group is comprised of numerous professionals and their children who excel in academics and athletics. He was proud of their ambitious goals and successes viable members of the Midland community.
Thomas and his wife Carolyn were the owners and he served as the CEO of TOE Driving Academy. Many young drivers waiting until that magical age to begin driving school, excitedly enrolled at TOE for this youthful milestone.
He was a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the Tall City Lions Club. Thomas was a faithful member of Visionary Hollowell Community United Methodist Church. His faith walk included serving in various ministries of the church. Motivated to serve he was a certified lay-leader, former Trustee Chair, Male Chorus member, Methodist Men Ministry, Sunday School and current chair of the Administrative Council until his demise.
Gaining his heavenly wings Thomas has joined his parents, brothers Fetos Esikhati, Orr Mbeya Esikhati, Hezron Andale, Amos Okumbo, Nelson Omongo, sisters Rev. Peggy Oriedo, Sellah Eshuchi, and his daughter Jamelia Johnson and grandson Korey Adams.
Thomas will be remembered by his friendly smile, his passion for photography to capture special moments, hosting family gatherings, and his distinctive singing voice at church. He truly loved his church family and he will be missed.
Thomas was known by many names but the ones he loved the most was being called Pops", "Grandpa", "Kuka", and "Uncle". His story will be told and retold by those he leaves behind. Left to cherish his memory is his wife Carolyn, daughter Rael (Michael) Young, sons Aaron (Monica) Esikhati, Anthony (Terri) Adams, sisters Florence Machayo, Susan Macharin, Joyce Esikhati, brother Dr. Ben Esikhaty MD., seventeen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, sister/brother in-laws other family members, church family and friends.
